National Minimum Wage will apply to live-in domestic workers from 1 April 2024
Currently, workers who live in their employer’s family home, who are treated as a member of the family (including the provision of living accommodation and meals, and the sharing of tasks and leisure activities), who are not charged for food or accommodation do not qualify for the national minimum wage. This exemption has been criticised by the Low Pay Commission as not fit for purpose, and will be removed from 1 April 2024. From then, live-in domestic workers must be paid the national minimum wage unless they are actual members of family.
If you have a live-in nanny or other domestic worker currently paid less than the national minimum wage, and need advice on the changes, get in touch with a member of the team.
