Soundbite: Tribunal fees will NOT be reintroduced
In our previous Soundbite, we mentioned that the UK Government was considering the reintroduction of tribunal fees, so that workers would have to pay a nominal fee of £55 to submit a claim or appeal.
However, following backlash from unions over the proposals, on Wednesday, David Lammy, the justice secretary, ruled out the possibility of such proposals being implemented. In his statement, he said, “It’s a fundamental principle that everyone, no matter their income, should be able to get access to justice to challenge unfair behaviour at work…That’s why it will remain free to bring a case to an employment tribunal, ensuring everyone, no matter their means, can stand up for their rights at work.”
It remains to be seen how already overstretched Tribunals will cope with the likely influx of claims once day 1 rights are introduced, as it is now clear that Tribunal fees will not be applied.
