Changes to Statutory Sick Pay for Low Earners
As part of its broader “Make Work Pay” initiative, the Government has announced significant changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) aimed at providing better financial support for low earners to enable people to take the time off they need to recover and remain employed rather than risk quitting their jobs altogether.
Currently, those earning below £123 per week are not eligible to receive SSP. Under the new reforms, which will affect up to 1.3 million people, employees who earn less than £125 per week will be eligible to receive 80% of their normal weekly earnings as SSP. This means that some of the lowest earners will be better off by up to £100 per week.
These changes are due to come into effect in 2026 as part of the broader Employment Rights Bill.
